Reception September Transition
We are delighted to welcome you to the Astley family. Over your time with us, we look forward to sharing amazing moments with you and your families and hope to support you on this wonderful journey through your first years in school.
In late May, we will welcome all families of our new Reception class to a welcome evening where we will share our welcome packs and some information about this important transition in your child’s life. We endeavour to make the transition into our school as smooth as possible for your children and yourself.
Throughout June and July, we will also host settling in sessions to help your child become familiar with Astley. We will also complete home visits for those children who do not currently attend our Nursery setting.
This section of the website is regularly updated, so please check back for further information. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any specific enquiries or wish to tour the school (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
Please see the presentation attached below as well as some photographs and information about Ash Class.

EYFS Curriculum in Reception
Children in Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. The children learn through a combination of whole class teaching, focus group activities and continuous provision. Please see the curriculum pages for more information about our curriculum.
At Astley, we follow Read Write Inc phonics programme. This is taught through Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. If you would like to find out more about the scheme, please follow this link: RWI parents page.
First Day of School
Drop off and Collection
Children should arrive at school between 8:40am and 8:50am, which helps to support congestion on the lanes surrounding the school. In the afternoon, collection for all pupils is at 3:20pm. Drop off and pick-up for Ash Class is from the doors that go immediately onto the school playground. At pick-up time, please stand close to the Ash doors so your child can see you at this busy time of the day.
What to bring on the first day?
Please bring a named water bottle and a waterproof coat on the first day. We try to have outdoor plat as much as possible, so it’s always useful to have a coat in school.
Children at Astley wear a pair of trainers during playtime and lunchtime – called outdoor shoes. This allows them to explore and play in all areas of our school grounds. Please bring a pair of trainers with you on your first day. Please do not send in laces until your child can tie them independently.
Milk and fruit
The children are provided with free milk (until their fifth birthday) and a piece of fruit (until the end of KS1). There is always a selection of fruit available for the children to choose from.
Book bags
All children will need book bag. Please name them, and if possible, add a key ring as it makes it much easier for your child to identify their bag. Please send your child’s book bag into school every day as they are used to transport letters, books and artwork to and from school.
School lunches
Hot dinners are available to all children in Reception. These must be booked in advance via Arbor. Parents are also welcome to send in a packed lunch from home. Children will eat in the hall with their class. Please name any packed lunch boxes from home.
PE and Outdoor Learning
Reception have PE twice a week. One lesson is to teach new skills and disciplines to the children the other is to develop their gross motor skills through climbing, swinging, balancing and jumping. We ask that the children’s PE kit is kept in school (red shorts and navy t-shirt). We will send it home at the end of each half term for washing.
Reception children will also participate in Forest School each week and Outdoor Learning on a Friday. We ask that all the children have a pair of wellies in school as well as waterproof trousers and coat or a puddle suit throughout the year. This allows us to explore whatever the weather!
Please can you make sure all items of clothing are clearly labelled with your child’s name.
Stay and Play
Stay and play is our wrap around provision. Please find more information on this page: Stay and Play.
