Religious Education

Religious education explores what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live.

At Astley C.E. Primary School, the Worcestershire Agreed Syllabus is taught through a planned curriculum, based on enquiry questions, enabling children to develop an understanding of the principal religions represented in the UK as well as consideration of non-religious worldviews.

Some units develop a depth of understanding about one religion whilst other units are thematic to enable children to compare the religions studied. In each unit the teaching and learning has three core elements, which ensure breadth and balance. A study begins with ‘making sense of beliefs’ moving on to ‘understanding the impact’ for people of faith and finally ‘making connections’ to others and their own lives.

Alongside developing an understanding of different faiths, children develop important skills and attitudes that in turn deepens their knowledge. During their studies, children visit places of worship including St Peter's Church in Astley and a Sikh Gurdwara in Birmingham. They ask questions of people of faith to understand how faith impacts life.
